Back-to-the-office season is just around the corner! And how your office makeup looks will depend on the office itself and your field of activity. But let’s be honest, strict business makeup rules are a thing of the past. They may be appropriate in large companies or among old-school colleagues.
In other cases, when your colleagues are mostly your age and you last heard about the dress code at school, the rules for makeup in the office are not so strict. In this material, we will talk about those that you may not follow at all for a long time.
Rule #1: No shiny textures
It is believed that one of the basic principles of business makeup is the absence of any hint of sexuality. Therefore, old-school makeup artists recommend excluding shiny and pearly textures, such as shimmery shadows, highlighter or lip gloss. But in the era of “glazed” skin, healthy shine and the return of trends from the 2000s (by the way, lip gloss came to us from there), we would not trust matte textures. Yes, they look more restrained, but at the same time they make the face less lively. After all, a healthy glow is the natural state of the skin, so it should be emphasized, not hidden.
Rule No. 2. There should be only one emphasis
You can forget about the rule of one accent in makeup. If you emphasize your eyes, this does not mean that your lips should be nude. And vice versa. There can be several accents, the main thing is to combine them correctly. For example, try to combine red lipstick with winged lines of the same color. Or do monochrome makeup in peach tones, emphasizing the eyelids, cheeks and lips.
Rule 3. Naked is the beginning of everything
According to the rules of business makeup, there is nothing more appropriate than nudity in the workplace. Nude eye and lip makeup is the gold standard. But it has been out of fashion for several years. Now you don’t need to choose nudity as the only right solution. Your look can be in the style of the “office siren” (we wrote about it in detail here), in a single color scheme or complemented by metallic accents. But with trendy makeups like crying girl makeup or tired girl makeup, it is better not to appear in the office to avoid unnecessary questions.
Rule 4: Red lips can wait until the evening.
It is believed that red, red and burgundy lipstick shades are acceptable in business style, but only in the evening. But during the day you should choose softer shades – pale pink and beige. Is it worth following this rule if you are sure that today is the only day of the year when you should wear bright red lipstick? Our answer is no. The only rule to follow when applying red lipstick is to use a pencil before applying the product. So during the day you do not have to choose only lip balm or plain lipstick.
Rule No. 5. Mascara – black, eyeliner – brown
As for mascara and eyeliner, according to the rules of business makeup, they should be in natural colors – black, black-brown or black-gray. But if your company does not have a strict dress code, then in 2024 you can forget about this principle. A small pink arrow or tinted lower eyelashes look interesting, not provocative. And yes, a barely noticeable bright accent in makeup can be an excellent reason to chat with a colleague.
