Care routine unsuited to your skin type, genetic predisposition, hormonal disorders… Once you have passed puberty, acne can still act and affects 25% of the French population. THE fatigueOur disease of the century is often singled out as an aggravating factor, but how could it affect skin health? We explain.
How does stress affect acne?
When we’re stressed, whether it’s a deadline at work, exams or personal worries, the pituitary gland (an endocrine gland located at the base of the brain) produces a hormone, corticotropin, which increases the production of cortisol, also known as “the hormone stress”. And when its rate increases, the body responds in different ways, including sending a message to the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum.
This applies to all skin types, but those who are already prone to blemishes are particularly concerned: ” If you suffer from acne, stress can make the problem worse confirms dermatologist John Minni.
In addition to the initial stress, additional stress related to the condition of the skin is added. It’s a bit like the snake biting its own tail: stress produces acne and acne produces stress. And it can go on for a long time if we do nothing to stop the process.

How to treat stress-related acne?
While stress can aggravate acne, it’s rarely the only factor in the appearance of blackheads and other comedones, which is why throwing yourself into meditation won’t necessarily have a “wow” effect on your skin. On the other hand, an appropriate holistic and interdisciplinary approach can give excellent results. So do not hesitate to meet one or more other professionals (psychologist, sophrologist, phytotherapist, aromatherapist, acupuncturist, master yogi, etc.), in addition to the general practitioner and above all the dermatologist, to find the most suitable treatment for their needs and be able to better manage their stress and their skin.
In the bathroom, stress acne is treated in the same way as juvenile or hormonal acne, i.e. using hygiene products and specific topical treatments (prescribed or commercially available) and taking therapy, if deemed necessary by the doctor.
Hygiene measures in case of acne
Morning and evening, cleanse the skin with delicate products that will remove excess sebum without attacking the hydrolipidic film. The double cleansing technique, which combines a fatty make-up remover (conditioner, oil, etc.) with a soap-free cleansing cream or gel, is particularly suitable for skin suffering from blemishes. To hydrate while fighting against the dehydrating effects of some active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and retinoids, opt for a treatment specially formulated for acne-prone skin, therefore non-comedogenic. Finally, let’s not forget sunscreen, especially if we have a significant risk of pigmented scars and/or use a medical treatment prescribed by a doctor to get rid of his pimples.
