BBC Sport presenter Kelly Somers has announced she is expecting her second child, revealing she kept the pregnancy secret throughout her coverage of this summer's World Cup.
Kelly, 35, shared the news in an Instagram post this week, posting a series of polaroid photos with the caption: "So, I didn't just overeat in America... Beyond my wildest dreams - soon to be mama of two."
The broadcaster shares a two-year-old daughter with her fiance, Max. Their daughter was born in November 2023.
Years-long fight for a PCOS diagnosis
In a new interview, Kelly admitted she feared she would never become a mother because of polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal condition that affects fertility. Between 70 and 80 per cent of women with PCOS struggle to conceive naturally.
It took Kelly years to get a diagnosis. She struggled with painful periods and cycles that were often 45 days long, and was mistakenly diagnosed with endometriosis, a misdiagnosis that led her close to having surgery before she backed out at the last minute.
She was eventually diagnosed with PCOS in her late twenties. "I had to fight for years to get answers," she told The Telegraph. "Constantly being told I was fine while knowing I really wasn't isn't good enough. Women's health needs to be taken seriously."
Kelly said she was thankful she did not need fertility treatment after her diagnosis, and instead just needed a series of scans to establish when she was ovulating. She became pregnant months later, and her daughter was born in November 2023.
A second diagnosis after birth
After her daughter's birth, Kelly was diagnosed with adenomyosis, a condition in which tissue from the inner lining of the womb grows into the outer muscular wall of the womb.
"I just remember my heart sinking again and thinking, 'What next?'" she recalled. She added that the new health issue pushed her to try for another child sooner than she and Max had planned.
Wedding plans on hold
With a new baby on the way and a busy BBC schedule, Kelly and Max are now struggling to find time to get married, six years after his pandemic proposal. She has joked the two may have to wait until 2040, after previously putting their wedding plans on hold for their daughter, World Cups and a house move.
A viral World Cup interview
Kelly was pregnant throughout this summer's World Cup, revealing she started the tournament a size 8 and ended it a size 12.
The tournament was also memorable for a different reason: Kelly went viral for an interview that Wayne Rooney called "the best interview I've ever seen." After England's nail-biting clash with Mexico, Kelly was tasked with interviewing captain Harry Kane, who had lost his voice after belting out Wonderwall in the stadium, making for a hilarious exchange.
