Fashion designers have launched their key handbag collections for autumn 2026, introducing oversized totes, fruit clutches, and deep burgundy shades across major runways. Updates to daily autumn wardrobes center heavily on purses, with options available for every preference, ranging from spacious bowling bags to structured everyday totes and whimsical clutches shaped like fruit or birds.

Key colors for the season

Deep burgundy has emerged as a dominant hue for the upcoming autumn season. The shade functions as a hybrid of dark brown and wine, offering a steady competitor to traditional neutral base colors. It presents a less formal look than black while avoiding the common nature of camel, remaining versatile enough to complement denim, suede, and knitwear garments.

Rich chocolate and cognac tones continue to represent classic quiet luxury aesthetics that remain in style. Designers at the Italian fashion house Bottega Veneta presented the majority of their seasonal purse models within this specific color range.

Mustard offers a bolder alternative for individuals seeking an expressive accent without turning to harsh neon colors. Fashion stylists highlight reptile-effect leather as the ideal texture for mustard bags, marking reptile patterning as a primary trend of the season.

Natural earthy tones provide a fresh direction for those tired of standard green shades. Moss green items with soil undertones appeared in recent runway shows from Kallmeyer, Altuzarra, and Balmain. Olive shades made prominent appearances during presentations by Simone Rocha, MM6 Maison Margiela, and Ashlyn.

Statement silhouettes and shapes

Extremely large handbags are returning to prominence on international runways. The voluminous styles, famously mocked as ridiculously spacious by the character Tom Wambsgans in the television drama Succession, were highlighted in collections from Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Dries Van Noten, Celine, and Miu Miu. These broad designs suit travel requirements while remaining practical for busy urban schedules.

Novelty clutches are taking on unconventional forms that barely resemble traditional bags. During the Chanel autumn-winter 2026 runway show, models carried purses shaped like birds and fruits suspended from gold and leather chains. Bottega Veneta introduced clutches shaped like hardcover books, matching a broader cultural interest in reading, while Jacquemus debuted a clutch designed to look like a bundle of onions.

The East-West silhouette, which features a horizontally elongated body reminiscent of a geographical map, remains popular for another season. The trend gained momentum through the iconic Le Teckel model from French design house Alaïa, named after the German word for dachshund due to its long body shape. Saint Petersburg brand Arny Praht has focused heavily on dog-shaped silhouettes, while luxury labels Balenciaga and Khaite frequently release similar horizontal models.

Soft and relaxed silhouettes have replaced the rigid geometric structures seen in previous seasons. Supple leather and pliable suede designs featured prominently in recent lines from Phoebe Philo, Hermès, Coach, Loewe, Bottega Veneta, and Ferragamo.

Carrying bags with open zippers has developed into a notable styling trend across multiple runway shows. Fashion houses including Etro, Loewe, Prada, Chanel, Miu Miu, and Bottega Veneta sent models down the runway with unzipped purses. While luxury labels popularized the look, carrying an unzipped bag from a more accessible brand carries less risk of damaging expensive internal linings.

The bowling bag silhouette is experiencing a revival driven by nostalgia for millennium fashion trends. Originally crafted to transport bowling balls and footwear, the style was gradually adapted for daily life due to its spacious interior and wide top opening. After reaching widespread popularity during the 1990s and 2000s, the shape has regained traction as Y2K aesthetics return to fashion.

Essential materials for autumn

Glossy patent leather serves as a practical selection for transitional autumn weather. The sleek surface resists rain, cleans easily, and maintains structural shape for rigid designs. Reptile-effect leather featuring python, crocodile, or lizard textures elevates simple shapes and pairs effectively with mustard or cognac hues.

Suede offers a soft and casual texture suitable for unzipped bag styles, though the material requires careful handling due to vulnerability to moisture and dirt. Woven leather utilizing Bottega Veneta signature Intrecciato technique remains a top luxury choice, though affordable woven alternatives often carry shorter lifespans. Tweed and wool textiles provide an unexpected cozy element that complements quiet luxury wardrobes.

Leading designer models

The Row has expanded its collection with the Alma bag, a creation from founders Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen that has already been worn by Swedish model Elsa Hosk. The Alma presents a modern interpretation of the elongated baguette purse popularized by the character Carrie Bradshaw in the television series Sex and the City. Featuring a soft horizontal shape, the Alma comes in shades ranging from deep black to ivory.

Bottega Veneta creative director Louise Trotter designed the Giorno bag as a new model distinct from the brand iconic Dustbag. The Giorno retains a classic trapezoidal shape, drawstring cords, and leather shoulder strap, while adding a top fold-over flap for improved functionality. Named after the Italian word for day, the bag is built for daily activities spanning work and evening events.

Gucci introduced the Horsebit Duomo bag, featuring a structured shape that references the heritage of the Italian fashion house alongside its signature equestrian hardware fastener. Made from glossy patent leather suitable for rainy weather, the model includes a folding short handle and an adjustable strap for shoulder or crossbody wear.

Ferragamo released the Cara Bag, which has been seen in public with singer Rihanna, model Karlie Kloss, and actresses Anne Hathaway and Monica Barbaro. The model features a multi-layered construction resembling an accordion, balanced by the house signature Gancini metal fastener and woven leather side panels that reference the Ferragamo Hug Bag.

Prada has secured the Buckle Bag in its permanent lineup following its 2024 debut. Initially crafted with short handles for hand carrying, the line expanded to include a relaxed Buckle Bucket version with a long strap, available in smooth calfskin with nappa lining or soft suede.

Miu Miu introduced the Vivant bag as part of its spring 2026 accessory line, offering a modern take on the traditional bowling bag. Featuring a sculpted trapezoidal shape, soft lines, and elongated handles for hand or shoulder carrying, the Vivant accommodates cosmetics, phones, documents, and tablets. Its name derives from the French word for lively.

Loewe launched the Amazona 180 to mark the 180th anniversary of the Spanish fashion house. Updating the original 1975 design created as an elegant women work bag, the new version features a single top handle and a softer silhouette suited for casual wear.

Handbag selection for body types

Selecting the right purse requires matching dimensions to individual body proportions. Petite women benefit from small or medium structured bags that maintain clear lines without overwhelming smaller frames. Tall individuals suit medium or large designs equipped with long shoulder straps.

Figures with fuller curves pair well with structured medium or large bags featuring clean geometry and minimal metal hardware. Athletic body types match moderately soft medium-sized designs. Evening outings call for small purses, while medium sizes offer everyday versatility for office use, and large totes remain essential for travel.

Color choices should focus on classic neutrals such as black, brown, white, or beige for maximum pairing flexibility, keeping in mind that light fabrics require frequent cleaning. Buyers should also inspect leather quality, stitching precision, metal hardware, and internal compartment organization before purchasing.
