Athens has been placed under heavy police security with central road closures and a ban on public demonstrations during a visit by United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday.
Thousands of police officers alongside aerial surveillance drones have been deployed across the Greek capital to enforce draconian safety measures that will remain in effect until Thursday morning.
The Hellenic Police announced that traffic restrictions began on Tuesday afternoon and will reach their peak throughout Wednesday before ending in the early hours of Thursday, 8 October 2026. Security operations also include sniffer dog inspections at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Marco Rubio serves as the chief diplomatic official for the United States, directing foreign policy and international relations. Athens, the capital city of Greece, frequently hosts international diplomatic visits at key government buildings near Syntagma Square.
Traffic restrictions across central avenues
Police have implemented temporary traffic stoppages and vehicle diversions around Syntagma Square and major central thoroughfares. Affected routes include Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue, Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, Panepistimiou Street and Stadiou Street, with further closures applied wherever necessary.
Authorities indicated that restrictions will expand or be lifted gradually depending on prevailing road conditions. Police recommended that drivers completely avoid taking private vehicles into central Athens on Wednesday and requested that commuters rely on public transport instead.
The Hellenic Police urged motorists travelling through the broader central area to strictly follow directions from traffic controllers stationed at key points. In an official statement, police asked drivers for their understanding and cooperation to prevent additional traffic disruption.
Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue form major arterial roads connecting central Athens to eastern suburbs and embassy districts. Syntagma Square functions as the primary transit junction and civic centre of the capital.
Total ban on outdoor demonstrations
The Director of the Athens Police Directorate issued a formal order prohibiting all public outdoor gatherings and motorized marches across a designated area of the city centre. The ban came into effect at 6:00 am on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, and remains active until 6:00 am on Thursday, 8 October 2026.
The security zone is bounded by Rizari Street, Ploutarchou Street, Kleomenous Street, Melinas Merkouri Street, Koniari Street, Anastasiou Tsocha Street, Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, Kaisarias Street, Michalokopoulou Street, Alkmanos Street, Ionos Dragoumi Street, Vasileos Alexandrou Avenue, Efroniou Street and Rizari Street.
Police officials stated that the prohibition was imposed because public gatherings and vehicle rallies posed a serious threat to public safety. Authorities cited risks of serious criminal acts against life, physical integrity and property, alongside major disruption to the social and economic life of the municipality.
Organizers have planned rallies and protest marches despite the police order. Security forces maintain a high presence along the perimeter of the restricted zone to prevent unauthorized assemblies.
Subway closures and hospital access
Senior police officers confirmed that authorities will attempt to minimize inconvenience for citizens needing to enter the city centre. Underground metro stations will only close for brief periods and solely for as long as necessary during official movements.
Officials specified that Evangelismos metro station will not close at any point during the security operation due to its proximity to the adjacent hospital. Evangelismos Hospital is one of the largest public healthcare facilities in Greece, providing emergency services in central Athens.
Traffic controllers and specialized police units will remain stationed across key intersections until the scheduled end of all restrictions on Thursday morning.
