Apple announced an updated Mac Studio desktop computer powered by its new M5 Max and M5 Ultra processors on August 25, 2026, delivering significant performance improvements for professional workloads and artificial intelligence tasks. The new machine retains the compact form factor of the original Mac Studio model, which Apple first introduced in 2022.

Pre-orders opened on August 25, 2026, with official sales starting on September 22. The base Mac Studio model featuring the M5 Max chip is priced from $2,499, while the flagship M5 Ultra version starts at $5,499. A top-end configuration featuring 512 gigabytes of memory will go on sale at the end of October.



M5 Max performance specifications

The Mac Studio equipped with the M5 Max processor features an 18-core central processing unit comprising 6 maximum performance cores and 12 performance cores. It also houses a 40-core graphics processing unit in which every core includes an integrated neural accelerator.

Apple said the M5 Max configuration supports up to 128 gigabytes of unified memory with a bandwidth reaching 614 gigabytes per second. This architecture accelerates software code compilation, image generation, and local language model workloads, while graphics performance has increased by 50 percent over the previous generation to provide higher frame rates in 3D graphics applications.



M5 Ultra architecture and AI capability

The flagship M5 Ultra configuration connects two M5 Max chips into a single cohesive system through Apple's UltraFusion technology. This creates a 36-core central processor made up of 12 maximum performance cores and 24 performance cores, alongside an 80-core graphics processor equipped with neural accelerators.

Supporting up to 512 gigabytes of unified memory with 1.2 terabytes per second of bandwidth, the M5 Ultra allows users to run large language models entirely on the device. Apple reported that language model query processing performance is 10.7 times faster than on the earlier M1 Max processor, and the system can simultaneously play up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30 frames per second.



Storage, ports and display support

The updated Mac Studio features solid-state storage based on the PCIe Gen 6 interface, doubling data read and write speeds compared to earlier drives. Thunderbolt 5 ports offer bandwidth of up to 120 gigabits per second for connecting high-speed external drives and peripherals, as well as enabling users to connect multiple Mac Studio systems together into a cluster for distributed computing tasks.

Networking and display capabilities have also been updated through an integrated N1 chip that adds support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. For professional camera and broadcast workflows, genlock technology over USB-C provides precise display synchronization with professional cameras, and the device supports up to eight simultaneous external monitors.

Apple Inc., headquartered in Cupertino, California, designed the Mac Studio desktop line to sit between its compact Mac mini and high-end Mac Pro workstations. Aimed primarily at creative professionals such as video editors, 3D animators, and software developers, the compact desktop line utilizes Apple's custom ARM-based system-on-chip architecture.

The UltraFusion interconnect technology used in Apple's flagship silicon uses a high-density interposer that joins two chip dies with minimal latency and ultra-high memory bandwidth. Thunderbolt 5 and PCIe Gen 6 represent the latest industry standards in high-speed hardware expansion and data transfer, while genlock signal synchronization is an established standard used in television and film production to keep displays synchronized with camera sensors.
