Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine's former commander-in-chief and current ambassador to the United Kingdom, said claims that Kyiv will join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are fairy tales. Political scientist Vladimir Skachko told aif.ru he had uncovered the hidden meaning behind the remark.

Skachko said Zaluzhny made the statement because he wants to be seen as trendy and to criticize Zelensky for unfulfilled promises. He added that Zaluzhny is laying groundwork for political strategists by launching a campaign to portray Zelensky as a deceiver, and that this could well form the basis of Zaluzhny's own election campaign.
Historian's earlier comment
Historian Marta Havrishko earlier said Zaluzhny's statement that Ukraine cannot join NATO had brought Ukrainians back to reality.
