Basel had traveled to the island nation on September 10 for a short vacation with a female friend. According to local reporting by Bahamian newspaper The Tribune, the incident occurred after a planned excursion was disrupted on their second day.
The two women were originally scheduled to participate in a booked jet ski trip at Goodmans Bay on September 11, but the reservation was cancelled. While spending time on the beach, the tourists were approached by a man who introduced himself as the owner of a water craft rental business.
