Allison Janney had a visibly stunned reaction after winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in The Diplomat during the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Janney beat out six other nominees for the award: Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif, Katherine LaNasa and Sepideh Moafi, all nominated for The Pitt, Julianne Nicholson for Paradise, and Karolina Wydra for Pluribus.
The win marked Janney's eighth Emmy Award.
"This is not what I planned for this category at all," Janney, 66, said in her acceptance speech. "I'm very surprised and very, very grateful to be here."
She thanked the Television Academy before turning her attention to The Diplomat's cast and crew.
"I have to thank Debora Cahn who is our writer," she said. "So much fun. And Alex Graves, our director, who I adore, and Janice Williams, and the coolest woman on the planet, Keri Russell, who leads us all every day."
Janney closed her speech by saying, "The entire cast is divine. I am so grateful and so lucky. And I thank you very much from the bottom of my heart."
Tying the Emmy Acting Record
With the win, Janney is now tied with Jean Smart, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman for the most acting wins in Emmy Awards history, with eight each.
Backstage, Janney told the Television Academy she was close to tears over the surprise victory.
"I'm going to start crying because I really didn't expect this today," she said. "I'm so lucky to be where I am right now and to be standing here."
Reuniting With Bradley Whitford
Speaking to E! on the red carpet before the ceremony, Janney joked about working alongside Bradley Whitford, her former West Wing co-star, who plays her onscreen husband on The Diplomat.
"I said, Debora, do not write any bedroom scenes, please," Janney said during Live from E!: 2026 Emmys. "She did write one. We were in a fight, and we got into bed and just curled up, snuggled. But you know, that's about as far as I want to go with that."
