Russian film director Alexander Voytinsky has unveiled key details of his new animated feature movie The Adventures of the Little Mammoth: In Search of Mother. He told the National News Service that the story is dedicated to mothers everywhere and explores universal themes designed to resonate with audiences around the world.
The animated feature is scheduled for release in Russian cinemas on October 1, 2026, coinciding with simultaneous theatrical debuts in Romania and Vietnam. Following its big-screen run, the film will become available on television networks and streaming platforms. Negotiations are currently underway to secure theatrical distribution in several additional countries.
The plot centers on Pushistik, a young mammoth who awakens from a thousand-year hibernation in a frozen wilderness to find his mother missing. After hearing rumors that she may be in Africa, Pushistik embarks on a dangerous journey across the globe to locate her.
Accompanying Pushistik on the quest is Tupik, a young chick who dreams of winning an African talent competition. Along the way, the travelers face life lessons about growing up, overcoming obstacles, and discovering the power of love and friendship.
Voice Cast and Characters
Voytinsky assembled a prominent voice cast for the project, featuring popular musicians and television personalities including NILETTO, Pelageya, Yana Churikova, and Gazan. Comedian Vadim Galygin provides the voice for Tupik, while the performer voicing Pushistik has not yet been named.
Pop singer Philipp Kirkorov joined the cast to play a character designated as the King of Banana Pop. Voytinsky explained that he had named the character Philipp before casting took place and was initially nervous about pitching the role. However, Kirkorov embraced the self-deprecating humor of the character and recorded his vocal performance in a single take.
Entertainer Alexander Revva plays a vain flamingo character named Flamingou. Although the role was not written specifically for Revva, Voytinsky felt his style was an ideal match for the dramatic, self-absorbed bird.
Expanding a Soviet Classic
The new film expands upon the classic Soviet animated short film A Mother for the Little Mammoth. Produced in 1981 by the Ekran studio and featuring music by composer Vladimir Shainsky, the original cartoon became a beloved staple of Soviet animation for its emotional tale of an orphaned calf searching for family.
Voytinsky noted that the original short was built largely around a brief musical sequence where the title character floats on an ice floe to Africa, meeting a monkey and a hippopotamus before finding a surrogate mother in an elephant. He described the classic cartoon as an initial proposal that provided room for a full feature adaptation.
The iconic Mammoth Song from the 1981 release has been adapted as one of the primary musical themes for the new feature. In the updated narrative, the elephant mother explains to the young mammoth that maternal love lives within the hearts of everyone he encounters.
Real World Paleontological Origins
The story of the little mammoth is rooted in actual paleontological history. In 1977, gold miners working in the Magadan Region of the Soviet Far East discovered a remarkably preserved baby mammoth near a local stream. The specimen was named Dima after the nearby waterway.
Dima was preserved almost entirely intact in the permafrost, making the discovery a landmark event in global paleontology. Children's author Dina Nepomnyashchaya was inspired by the mystery of why the calf was found isolated from a herd, leading her to write the original story about a lost mammoth trying to find his mother.
Voytinsky emphasized that his production followed this underlying premise, aiming to create a moving story about family bonds that will appeal to international viewers as distribution agreements expand.
