Spanish digital platform atresplayer has launched its new original drama series A la deriva, starring Paula Echevarria, Daniel Grao, and Michel Noher, ahead of a planned prime-time broadcast on terrestrial television channel Antena 3.
The ten-episode production begins in 1968 in the fictional Spanish coastal village of Bastuel, where a tragic maritime disappearance triggers a mystery that spans years across a close-knit fishing community.
The opening sequence depicts the fishing vessel Minerva rocking dangerously beneath a violent storm directly overhead, where decisions made by skipper Hector, played by Daniel Grao, push the crew to the brink of shipwreck. On shore, the mothers, wives, and children of the sailors gather around the ship radio, watching as communication cuts off during what appears to be their final conversation with their loved ones.
The missing vessel carried Hector alongside crew members Vicente, played by Llorenc Gonzalez; Cristobal, played by Cristian Valencia; German, played by Albert Baro; Curro, played by Richard Holmes; and Ramon, played by Joaquin Notario. The women of Bastuel receive the news of the vessel's disappearance at high sea with fortitude.
Life in Bastuel after the disappearance
The story moves forward to 1970, when the families of the missing crew attempt to rebuild their lives and return to normality. However, the women of Bastuel find their lives unable to proceed because they are not legally considered widows. Under Spanish regulations of the era, married women still require their husband's formal permission for routine administrative tasks, including obtaining a driver's licence.
Lucia, portrayed by Paula Echevarria, continues raising Bruno, played by Ian Losada, her son with Hector, following a marriage that was experiencing difficulties before the tragedy. Lucia takes charge of the family shipowner position, receiving reluctant assistance from her mother-in-law, Dolores, played by Adelfa Calvo.
At the same time, Hector's best friend Tristan, played by Michel Noher, becomes integrated into the family's daily life. Meanwhile, Ramon's daughter Berta, played by Lucia Guerrero, decides to accept employment as a secretary for rival businessman Villanueva, portrayed by Roberto Enriquez.
The return of the Minerva survivors
The newly established order in the village is shattered when the Civil Guard unexpectedly announces that several survivors from the Minerva have been found alive. The sudden news interrupts the grieving process for mothers and wives with violence and mystery, reopening deeply buried secrets across Bastuel.
Tension escalates through surreal developments, including Curro appearing in the role of one of the dead sailors. Meanwhile, Hector undergoes a distinct narrative arc that leaves viewers questioning whether the returned captain has genuinely changed during his absence.
