6 Behaviors That Signal Emotional Immaturity in Adults

Your Tango identifies six telling habits of emotionally immature adults, from picking pointless arguments and hoarding clutter to cancelling plans and copying others.

6 Behaviors That Signal Emotional Immaturity in Adults

Emotionally and mentally immature adults tend to create chaos around them, attract drama, and exhaust the people in their lives, according to Your Tango. When people fail to shed harmful habits formed in youth, the publication says, those patterns make it very difficult to build genuine relationships.

They pick fights

Children struggle to accept that they are not the centre of the universe, and they act out when they do not get their way, Your Tango notes. That behaviour is normal in childhood but not in adulthood. Immature people, the publication says, start arguments over small things that are not real problems, dragging those around them into unnecessary drama.

They generate excessive waste

Mature people are mindful of their environmental footprint and make an effort to avoid single-use plastics and littering, according to Your Tango. Emotionally immature people, by contrast, may not register how much waste they produce, and may not care even if they do.

They hoard things they never use

While wastefulness is one problem, holding on to everything is another, the publication argues. Some people become so attached to objects tied to memories that their homes grow cluttered and uncomfortable for guests. They may not even use the things they insist on keeping.

They shift blame onto others

Maturity means understanding that you are not always right, Your Tango explains. Mature people can put themselves in someone else's position and accept responsibility, guided by empathy. Immature people, the publication says, lack the reflective skills to examine their own actions and will not acknowledge fault.

They cancel plans at the last minute

Cancelling occasionally when something unexpected comes up is understandable, but when it becomes a pattern it signals immaturity, according to Your Tango. People on the receiving end feel ignored and as though their time does not matter. Immature individuals cancel without much thought and rarely consider the impact on others.

They imitate others instead of developing their own identity

Individuality is what allows people to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to those around them, the publication says. When someone puts excessive effort into copying another person's style or mannerisms, it reflects an inability to build a sense of self, which Your Tango identifies as a hallmark of emotional and mental immaturity.
