5 Affordable Family Cars Built to Last, Mechanics Say

Mechanics and insurance experts have named five affordable family cars they say will run for years without serious breakdowns, in comments published by GoBankingRates.

The Toyota RAV4 topped the list. Mark Skirvin, co-founder of Cash Auto Salvage, said the 2019 to 2023 model years stand out for reliability, partly because they used simpler electronic systems. He added that parts are easy to find and maintenance costs are low.

Skirvin also recommended the Honda CR-V, specifically 2017 to 2022 models. He said fewer than 5 percent of the CR-Vs his company handles have engine or transmission problems, and that most arrive at his salvage yard after accidents or flood damage rather than mechanical failure.

Alan Gelfand, a mechanic and owner of German Car Depot, praised two minivans. He said the Honda Odyssey delivers low fuel consumption without sacrificing reliability. He described the Toyota Sienna as another strong three-row option capable of lasting years without serious faults, noting that its hybrid version comes with a sealed e-CVT transmission that requires no servicing.

Rounding out the list, Andrew Franks, co-founder of claims service Claimsline, recommended the Hyundai Palisade. Franks said the three-row crossover has built a reputation for dependability through consistent first-year performance and a lengthy warranty.
