Every Halloween, millions of fans return to visit It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Browa heartwarming, funny and surprisingly emotional animated classic that has stood the test of time.
Recently, The Vintage Vault shared some fascinating facts about this Peanuts staple, giving us an even deeper appreciation for its enduring magic and charm.
The special actually didn’t have its world premiere in the United States. The Vintage Vault explained:
“It premiered in Canada. Wait, what? The most American Halloween special ever made, complete with trick-or-treating, costume parties and pumpkin patches, debuted first in North of the Border. On October 26, 1966, CBC Television aired it before CBS got its hands on it the next day, October 27.”
It’s a little crazy to think that this quintessentially American story of faith, friendship and disappointment had its first audience outside the United States. But that’s part of what makes it It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown so special because it connects with everyone, everywhere.
The video also highlights that this was the first ever Halloween TV special, setting the stage for decades of spooky season programming. For over 54 years it remained a television tradition before moving to Apple TV+, where it continues to reach new generations of fans.
Of course, none of this would have existed without the creator Charles M. Schulzwho made sure the special stayed true to its heartfelt storytelling style. As The Vintage Vault states:
“It breaks your heart when Sally skips trick-or-treating because she trusted her brother. The hope when Linus believes despite the relentless teasing from everyone around him. And the crushing disappointment when he realizes he’s been deceived by his own faith again. Then Schultz envelops him with just enough warmth to send you home happy yet thoughtful.”
