Director Ridley Scott talked a bit about his time making the classic 1982 sci-fi film Blade Runner. While the film is great, developing the film was a bad experience for Scott, and when the film was initially released, it was met with some criticism from critics who thought the film was “dumb”.
Speaking to Total Film, Scott reflected on the troubled production of Blade Runner, saying:
“[The shoot] it was a bad experience for me. I’ve had horrible partners. Finance guys, who killed me every day. I had been very successful running a business and I knew I was building something very, very special. So I would never take no for an answer. But they didn’t understand what they had. You shoot it, edit it and mix it. And when you’re halfway through, everyone says it’s too slow. You have to learn that, as a director, you can’t listen to anyone. I knew I was making something very, very special. And now it’s one of the most important science fiction films ever made, which everyone feeds on. Every damn movie.
The director continued to share what he has recently rewatched Blade Runner for the first time in two decades and disagrees with those who find the film too slow or “stupid” and tells those who make it to “go fuck themselves.” He said:
“I hadn’t seen Blade Runner in 20 years. Truly. But I just watched it. And he’s not slow. The information you get is so original and interesting, talking about biological creations and out-of-this-world mining, which, at the time, they said was silly. I say, ‘Go fuck yourself.’”
Yes! The film is based on Philip K. Dickit’s the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Set in the dystopian Los Angeles of 2019, the film follows Rick Deckard, a retired “Blade Runner”, who is tasked with hunting down and “retiring” a group of rogue replicants (bioengineered beings virtually identical to humans). These replicants, led by Roy Batty, are looking for a way to extend their short lifespans.
It’s such an incredible movie, it’s hard to think that people out there don’t like it! But to each his own.
